President Bush today thanked military members for their work during Hurricane Katrina relief efforts and expressed pride in their service.

Visiting Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base New Orleans in Belle Chasse, La., Bush addressed National Guardsmen from 49 states who had participated in relief efforts.

"I'm here to thank you all for what has been an incredible outpouring of talent and skill and compassion to help the good folks of this part of the world that have suffered mightily," he said. "I'm incredibly proud of those who wear our nation's uniform, and I'm incredibly proud of the job you have done. You have brought great credit to your units, credit to your family, and credit to our nation."

There is still much work to be done, Bush said, but the results will be worth all the effort.

"Out of this rubble is going to come some good; out of the devastation is going to come new cities and new hope," he said. "And I hope you take great inspiration in being a part of the renewal of this important part of the world."

Bush spoke with the troops at the end of an overnight trip to the area affected by Katrina. Earlier in the day, the president was in Covington, La., and Pass Christian, Miss.
